The special toothpaste, Salutem, was developed to answer a common need - optimal care for your teeth with gentle touch for sensitive mucous membranes. Oral dryness, allergies, asthma and ulcers may often cause oral pain. This may make it hard to use normal flavoured, detergent- (foaming- agent) - or preservative -containing toothpaste.

Salutem toothpaste contains Sodium fluoride, Xylitol and natural Betaine. A fluoride free version is also available, and it can be used in areas where the fluoride content of the normal drinking water is high. Also very small children may use the fluoride free toothpaste.

Sodium fluoride is known to strengthen the tooth enamel at the right concentration (Newbrun 1989).

Xylitol inhibits the oral caries bacterial growth at the right concentration (Assev et al. 1997).

Betaine acts as a moisturising agent for oral mucous membranes (Söderling et al. 1998). In a series of clinical tests, Salutem toothpaste was shown to be the gentlest toothpaste of the tested ones, causing no change on oral mucosa after a fifteen minutes long exposure (Rantanen et al. 2001, kuva). Also, the individuals with very low salivary secretion found the Betaine containing toothpaste the most relieving of the tested toothpastes (Rantanen et al. 2003).

Salutem-toothpaste contains neither a common detergent Sodium lauryl sulphate, flavours like peppermint - or spearmint oils nor preservative Parabenzoic acid. All of these may act as irritating or allergic agents in toothpastes. In Salutem toothpaste there is no added colour.

Aftous ulcers may often be related to Sodium lauryl sulphate (Herlofsson 1994) in toothpastes. The foaming agent may irritate both normal and dry oral mucosa.

Flavours are the most common allergic agents in toothpastes (Sainio and Kanerva 1995). The strong flavours may also irritate sensitive mucosa, although no allergies can be detected.

The preservative Parabenzoic acid is also known as a common allergy-enhancing ingredient (Sainio and Kanerva 1995).

Persons with a common problem, dry mouth, sensitive oral mucosa, recurrent aphtous ulceration or other mucosa-related problem may find Salutem toothpaste comfortable and gentle.

Salutem- toothpaste does not need to be rinsed out of the mouth, and it does not cause oral pain even when teeth are brushed for a longer time. Also, wine tasters and gourmets may benefit from the use of Salutem toothpaste: normal toothpastes have been shown to have a dulling effect on the taste nerves, which Salutem does not have.
